Synchronized swimming is a sport that combines swimming, dance, and gymnastics. Athletes must be good swimmers, must have technically correct and graceful strokes, and must have endurance and stamina to cover distances and hold their breath underwater at the same time. Athletes must be able to count music, move to the beats in unison with their teammates, and perform for an audience and pull the audience into their performance. Athletes must be able to move quickly, efficiently, precisely, and must develop coordination and strength. Alignment, core control, and extension are key concepts that synchronized swimmers involve themselves with during every practice. Synchronized swimming is fun and full of camaraderie. It is creative, the water being the medium. It is moving and spectacular.
And like all sports, it is developmental. It is a matter of beginning as a novice and climbing the staircase to improvement through committing to the learning, the practices, the team, and the goal.
The Kitsap Water Blossoms consist of novice, intermediate, and age group swimmers who compete from November through June in both figure and routine meets. The season begins in September, getting the swimmers ready for the competitions that begin in November. From November through February, the team participates in Washington State meets, competing against five other clubs. From April through June, swimmers participate in both state and regional meets. The final regional meet in May determines whether age group swimmers will go on to Nationals. For the past two seasons, Kitsap Water Blossom members have participated in the Age group National event held at the end of June.
